NSW's $15,000 Interest-Free Solar and Battery Loan, Explained
If you've come across mention of a $15,000, zero-interest loan for solar and batteries, it's real — the NSW Home Energy Saver loan, a NSW Government program delivered through Brighte and Plenti. One thing worth knowing straight away: it's only available to NSW households. If you're reading this from South Australia, the companion piece on green loans covers the federal scheme (HEUF) that actually applies here instead.
How it works
Eligible NSW households can borrow up to $15,000 at 0% interest (0% comparison rate), over a term of up to 10 years, with no upfront establishment fees or ongoing monthly fees. It's delivered as consumer finance through Brighte and Plenti rather than directly by the government — you apply through an accredited installer connected to one of those two providers, not through a general government portal.
Who qualifies
Combined household taxable income needs to be $210,000 or under per year. You need to own the property — either as an owner-occupier or a landlord — and it must be located in NSW. The property cannot be social/community housing or used for short-stay accommodation. Standard credit assessments apply through Brighte or Plenti.
What it actually covers
Solar and battery systems both qualify, along with inverters and switchboard upgrades. Other reported eligible upgrades include heat pump hot water systems, reverse-cycle air conditioning, EV chargers, induction cooktops, insulation, double glazing, and draught-proofing — worth checking the current list on the NSW Government's own Home Energy Saver page directly, as eligible items are updated periodically.
Two key application details to keep in mind:
- Installer accreditation: your quote must come from a NETCC-accredited installer on Brighte or Plenti's approved provider list.
- Incentives applied first: any federal (STCs) or state energy incentives get deducted first before the loan amount is calculated. You finance the remaining balance, up to $15,000.
If you're outside NSW
This is a state-specific program — no equivalent state-wide 0% interest loan exists elsewhere. For South Australians and residents of other states, the federal Household Energy Upgrades Fund (HEUF) is the relevant discounted finance option instead, covered in detail in our general green loans post.

The honest bottom line
If you're a NSW homeowner or landlord under the $210k income cap, this is a genuinely strong deal — zero interest and zero fees on up to $15,000 is hard to beat by any other financing route.
